An evaluation of the feasibility of a centrally-located hospital should include analysis of these considerations:

  • The anticipated demographics of the community - how many people, in what age ranges, live where?
  • The anticipated health needs of the community - which medical services require hospitalization?
  • The space requirements to provide needed hospital services and the availability of suitable locations in our urban core areas - do we have the land required?
  • The financial vehicles available to fund a community-supported hospital or to entice a private hospital - do we need a Metro Hospital District?
  • The methods needed to involve the community in the siting decision - what would a "Hospital Siting Commission" look like?

The Eugene City Council held two worksessions in the fall of 2002 to discuss these and other issues.  Staff research identified a number of potential sites near the community's core, and Council adopted a policy encouraging development of hospital facilities in the central city.  Council directed staff to make the information available to either of the two area hospitals and to bring ideas back to the council.

The City Club of Eugene, with participation from both area hospital representatives, has also hosted a number of discussions on community health care concerns, as have other smaller groups throughout the community.  Members of the Lane Co. Board of Commissioners have likewise expressed an interest in researching and discussing the topic.

What format would be the best vehicle for ensuring community involvement in the siting process so that the best possible choices for the community are ultimately made?  CHOICES has circulated a draft proposal for a Hospital Siting Commission, and response comments are welcome!  Contact CHOICES if you would like a copy of the proposal.
