The Issues:

In the fall of 2001, PeaceHealth announced that it plans to build a new regional hospital campus in the Gateway area of Springfield, along the bank of the McKenzie River.  Shortly thereafter, a group of citizens and organizations, concerned about the impacts of a major facility at the edge of the urban area and about the loss of medical services in the community's core, formed CHOICES.

Our work focuses on analyzing the impacts of the proposed move, while simultaneously advocating for continued or new medical services for ALL members of our community.  We're actively working with both PeaceHealth and McKenzie-Willamette hospitals (and, in fact, a number of our coalition members are employees and board members of the hospitals), residents, community leaders, and elected officials of both Springfield and Eugene, and knowledgeable experts in many fields.

  • How close are you to existing and proposed hospital services?   Maps
  • Is PeaceHealth's Gateway site good for the community?   Impacts
  • Can an urban location provide a "healing environment"?   Options
  • Is downtown Eugene a viable location for a hospital?   Possibilities
